ItÕs a bit late to be
wishing everyone a happy new Year but this is our first opportunity to do so.
So happy 2006 which ( in case you donÕt know) as well as being the
Chinese Year of the Dog is also the International Year of Deserts and
Desertification. (If any of you have information or personal experience on this
topic, please get in touch with our Tunza editors.)
Even though the office was closed over Christmas and
the holiday season a lot has been going on both here and with our network. We
are pleased to be finding out more about the Post Congress Action Projects and
at the end of March we will be reviewing new projects. So if you have a small
scale project that needs support – contact our desk officers. You can

Gaby que deja a ni–o de la paz... Cuando lleguŽ en
enero de 2005 en una ciudad peque–a en el Reino Unido que ten’a algunas expectativas,
algunas ideas de c—mo ser’a. Mientras que termino un a–o de ofrecerse
voluntariamente como americano latino, Asia y la isla peque–a indica a oficial
de escritorio, puedo decir que era un rato œnico. El trabajo con un equipo
multicultural era totalmente nuevo pero una experiencia fant‡stica, todos ten’a
diversos puntos de la visi—n y diversas realidades pero trabajados para la
misma meta. La cosa m‡s importante que ganŽ aprend’a c—mo podr’a ayudar con la
situaci—n en mi pa’s, Perœ, y en mi vuelta c—mo poner mi experiencia en
pr‡ctica.
Gaby leaving Peace Child... When I arrived in January 2005 in a small town in
the United Kingdom I had some expectations, some ideas of how it would be. As I
end a year of volunteering as a Latin American, Asia and Small Island States
desk officer, I can say that it was a unique time. Working
with a multicultural team was completely new but a fantastic experience,
everybody had different points of view and different realities but worked for
the same goal. The most important thing I gained was learning how I could help
with the situation in my country, Peru, and on my return how to put my
experience into practice.

has set up an international fund to support small youth-led development
projects.
The application process for the Be the Change! Fund for is opened now. We will
be receiving applications for the grants (of approximately $500 - $1000
dollars) until 31 of March. If you want to Be the Change! in your community,

Melioration of Living conditions in Ninotsminda St Barbara Orphans Boarding
School
Traer la luz en la obscuridad era la tarea grande del equipo de proyecto
de la acci—n de Levan Kobakhidze en el colegio de internos de los huŽrfanos del
St Barbara de Ninotsminda. Comenzaron el trabajo en noviembre de 2005 para
proveer un sistema ligero de la emergencia y de la noche para la escuela, que
estaba sin electricidad durante la semana. Manejaron instalar un sistema
photovoltaic solar de la energ’a m‡xima 45-watt y tambiŽn recibieron el financiamiento
adicional del ' sol y tierra ', una organizaci—n local, instalar un sistema
basado en los satŽlites para que los ni–os reciban la radio y la TV. Durante el
mes del trabajo los voluntarios de los j—venes tambiŽn tomaron el cuidado de

Bringing light in the dark
was the big task of Levan KobakhidzeÕs Action Project team at Ninotsminda St
Barbara Orphans Boarding School. They started work in November 2005 to supply
an emergency and night light system for the school, which was without
electricity during the week. They managed to install a 45-watt peak power solar
photovoltaic system and also received additional funding from ÔSun and EarthÕ,
a local organization, to install a satellite system for the children to receive
radio and TV. During the month of work the young volunteers also took care of
many other mechanical problems and explained what they were doing to the
children enabling them to take part in the reparation and installation work.

Computers For The Children of Bangalore
Mi nombre es Francisco Pereira y nac’ en Quito, Ecuador. Me estoy
ofreciendo voluntariamente en la oficina del campo del ni–o de la paz en el
campo de la India que conduce el programa del piloto de la computadora. Los
gracias al financiamiento de Lloyds TSB que segu’a al congreso de la juventud
del mundo he podido poner mi proyecto de la acci—n en ejecucio'n y alrededor
1000 cabritos de escuelas rurales en Bangalore tendr‡n acceso a la ense–anza de
la inform‡tica antes de fin de a–o.
La escuela primaria de Kengeri se ha convertido en la primera de cuatro
escuelas para tener una sala de ordenadores completamente operacional. Hemos
manejado conseguir poner a tierra elŽctrico apropiado y ahora tener tres
computadoras el funcionar all’. Estoy desarrollando actualmente los planes
principales de la lecci—n que ser‡n utilizados en el resto de las escuelas,
basados en mis experiencias de las clases que estoy tomando en Kengeri. Todav’a
encuentro duro pensar que soy en uno de ƒL los capitales del mundo y los apenas
20km ausentes son los cabritos que nunca han visto una computadora. ÁLos
gracias a cada uno que ha trabajado con m’ en este proyecto, y si usted
quisiera ser parte de este proyecto nos dejaron saber!
My name is Francisco
Pereira and I was born in Quito, Ecuador. IÕm volunteering at Peace ChildÕs
field office in India field leading the computer pilot programme. Thanks to
funding from Lloyds TSB following the World Youth Congress I have been able to
implement my Action Project and around 1000 kids from rural schools in
Bangalore will have access to computer education by the end of the year.
Kengeri Primary School has become the first of four schools to have a fully
operational computer room. WeÕve managed to get proper electrical grounding and
now have three computers running there. IÕm currently developing the master
lesson plans that will be used in the rest of the schools, based on my
experiences from the classes IÕm taking at Kengeri. I still find it hard to
think that IÕm in one of the IT capitals of the world and just 20km away are
kids that have never seen a computer. Thanks to everyone that has worked with
me on this project, and if you would like to be part of this project let

Update from the Uganda Conservation Trust
La confianza de la conservaci—n de Uganda, ha realizado un mes sea de
largo el cambio! Proyecto en octubre. Esto juventud-condujo el proyecto
centrado en el agua y la salud del saneamiento con la punter’a de prevenir
enfermedades llevadas y relacionadas del agua. El informe de la evaluaci—n

The Uganda Conservation
Trust, has carried out a month long Be The Change! Project in October. This
youth-led project focused on water and sanitation health with the aim of
preventing water borne and related diseases. The Evaluation report said that
the group: ÒLived up to their mission of engaging young people in practical
environmental conservation. They have trained teachers, mobilized colleagues
and initiated practical activities. Their members are loyal and initiate
activities wherever they move. Their project was successfully completed and has
created a remarkable impression in their community and the division as a
whole.Ó The group were commended for initiating a number of Be The Change!
clubs and Sports Teams in schools and local community respectively and recognized
for promoting youth participation towards achievement of the UN Millennium

New Be The Change Challenge! Material
' Sea El Desaf’o Del Cambio!' Es el programa educativo
del ni–o de la paz que funciona en escuelas primarias y secundarias para
promover formas de vida sostenibles entre la gente joven. El esquema gira
alrededor del contrato de la forma de vida; esto pide que la gente joven firme
hasta cinco compromisos, las peque–as cosas que ayudan a hacer la manera que
viven m‡s sostenible. Se piden recordar apagar luces cuando salen de un cuarto,
para reciclar, para comprar comercio de la feria y para decir no a los bolsos
pl‡sticos en tiendas. Si sostienen estos compromisos por cuatro semanas se
conceden un certificado. ' Sea El
Desaf’o Del Cambio!' la marca de f‡brica ha experimentado recientemente gracias
de un makeover a las habilidades del nuevo fabricante de vinos de Edward del

The ÔBe The Change Challenge!Õ Is Peace ChildÕs educational programme which
runs in primary and secondary schools to promote sustainable lifestyles amongst
young people. The scheme revolves around the Lifestyle Contract; this asks
young people to sign up to five pledges, little things that help to make the
way they live more sustainable. TheyÕre asked to remember to switch off lights
when they leave a room, to recycle, buy fair trade and say no to plastic bags
in shops. If they sustain these pledges for four weeks they are awarded a
certificate.
The ÔBe The Change Challenge!Õ brand has recently undergone a makeover
thanks to the skills of new design intern Edward Cooper. To take a look at the

A medio camino con un viaje de Londres a Conakry
(Guinea), Freetown (Sierra Leona) y Rabat (Marruecos) puedo divulgar que el
desarrollo Juventud-conducido es vivo y creciente aqu’ en çfrica del oeste. He
estado en Freetown que desarrollaba un programa de YLD en sociedad con la
fundaci—n internacional de la juventud, (Baltimore, los E.E.U.U.) y el negocio
de la juventud internacional (Londres, Reino Unido). La respuesta del gobierno
y del donante que las agencias han sido extremadamente positivas, cada uno

Halfway through a trip
from London to Conakry (Guinea), Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Rabat (Morocco) I
can report that Youth-led Development is alive and growing here in West Africa.
IÕve been in Freetown developing a programme of YLD in partnership with the
International Youth Foundation, (Baltimore, USA) and Youth Business
International (London, UK). The response from government and donor agencies has
been extremely positive, everyone wants to do something for youth employment
but no one knows what exactly to do.

For the past eighteen
years Peace Child Israel has used theatre as a focal point for Arab-Israeli and
Jewish-Israeli teens with the purpose of creating common ground, and possible solutions
to the conflict plaguing their lives. Following performances in Israel, an Arab
and Jewish cast are touring the US with ÒSix Actors in Search of a PlotÓ. The
performance focuses on the role of history in cross-cultural dialogue and
questions how we can move toward a just co-existence for the Arab and Jewish
sectors of Israeli society.

Volunteerism Beats Tourism

In October 2005 a group of Cornish and Swedish studentÕs went on an educational
trip to Peace Child India, activities included building toilets at Kengeri
School and creating a reading room.
Due to the success of the trip, preparations for a similar trip later this year
are already underway.
